What is Viagra?

Viagra belongs to a class of drugs known as PED5 inhibitors, which means it will not produce an erection on its own; Sexual stimulation must still be obtained to produce an erection.  PED5 inhibitors do not affect libido.  Sexual arousal must still be achieved in order to obtain an erection.  Viagra can maintain erections where blood flow is the issue in producing the erection; however, if the issue lies in a hormone imbalance, Viagra will not remedy the ED issue and an alternate treatment should be considered.

Viagra differs from Cialis mainly by the drug’s active life. Viagra has a half-life of approximately 4-6 hours and is much quicker acting than Cialis.  The effects of Viagra will wear off after about 6 hours, therefore, additional doses may be required depending on each individual’s needs. Viagra should be taken approximately 30 minutes prior to sexual activity.   

PLEASE NOTE: This drug does NOT protect against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, hepatitis B, gonorrhea, syphilis, etc.).  It is recommended that an alternate form of protection, such as latex condoms, is also used to prevent pregnancy and transmission of STDs.

Sildenafil (Viagra) Dosage

• Starting Dose: 50 mg
• Adjust: up to 100 mg or down to 25 mg
• Time: 1 hour before sex. 30 minutes to 4 hours before sex.
• Frequency: once a day only

Side Effects:

Common side effects: headache or dizziness

Rare and serious side effects:

1. Severe Hypotension: Sildenafil can cause a big drop in blood pressure especially if taken with nitrates.
2. Priapism: A prolonged and painful erection lasting more than 4 hours which requires immediate medical attention.
3. Hearing Loss: Sudden decrease or loss of hearing.
4. Heart Attack or Stroke: though rare, there is a risk especially if you have existing heart conditions.

Precautions

• Medical History: Tell your healthcare provider your full medical history before using sildenafil especially if you have heart problems, high or low blood pressure, liver or kidney disease, or a history of stroke.
• Drug Interactions: Sildenafil can interact with certain medications such as nitrates, blood pressure medications and some antifungals and antibiotics. Always tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking.
• Alcohol: Limit alcohol intake while using sildenafil as it can increase the risk of side effects.
